What vehicle is this VIN, according to the US regulator? Decodes a Vehicle Identification Number against NHTSA's Product Information Catalog Vehicle Listing (vPIC) — the catalog of how every manufacturer assigns VINs, filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR Part 565 as a condition of selling or importing a vehicle for US roads. `vin` = a 17-character VIN, or a partial VIN using NHTSA's "*" wildcard (their documented example: 5UXWX7C5*BA). `model_year` = optional 4-digit year; NHTSA recommends always sending it, and it disambiguates the 30-year VIN cycle. Returns the vehicle as the manufacturer built it: make, manufacturer, model, series/trim, model year, body class, vehicle type, doors/seats; powertrain (fuel type, electrification level, cylinders, displacement, horsepower, drive type, transmission, EV battery/drive unit); assembly plant city/state/country; the full factory safety-equipment list (ABS, ESC, TPMS, airbag positions, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep, blind-spot, adaptive cruise, event data recorder, and more); and GVWR weight class. NHTSA's own decode error codes and error text ride on every response, including whether the check digit validates and whether the manufacturer is registered with NHTSA at all. Source: NHTSA vPIC (vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov). Keyless, public domain, 24 h cache. SCOPE: a SPECIFICATION decode of the manufacturer's VIN pattern — it describes what was built. It is NOT a registration, title, ownership, lien, insurance, odometer, accident, salvage or theft record, and it contains no information about any person. COVERAGE (NHTSA's own published figures, carried per response): ~99% from model year 1995, ~60-65% for 1980-1994, nothing before 1980. Every value is returned in an Ed25519-signed, provenance-stamped envelope (source and observation time) you can verify offline against /.well-known/keys, no account required.
